Unless you have access to a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing — expensive, lab-based, and impractical for regular tracking — every body fat method available to you at home is an estimate. The question is not which method is perfectly accurate, since none are, but which is accurate enough to be useful and consistent enough to track real change.

The body fat calculator uses the Navy tape method because it needs only a tape measure, has no batteries or hydration sensitivity to throw it off, and was validated against underwater weighing in the population it was designed for. Its main limitation is at the extremes — very lean or very heavy individuals see larger errors — but for most people in the middle of the range, it is a solid, free, repeatable option.
Smart scales send a tiny electrical current through your body and estimate fat from the resistance. The problem: that resistance changes with hydration, what you last ate, time of day, and even room temperature. It is common to see a 3–4 percentage point swing on the same scale within a single day — not because your body changed, but because your hydration did.
No home method will match a lab exactly, and that is fine — the goal is tracking direction and rate of change over months, which every method here can do reasonably well when used consistently.
Chasing a precise body fat percentage down to the decimal is usually less useful than most people assume, given the margin of error in every home method. What matters far more is the trend: is the number moving in the direction you want over 4–8 weeks, measured consistently? A single reading of 18.2% carries real uncertainty; a series of monthly readings showing a steady drop from 22% to 19% over four months is meaningful signal, even if each individual number has a few points of error baked in. Pair body composition tracking with how your clothes fit and how you feel in the gym — these qualitative signals often confirm a trend before the numbers clearly show it, and they cost nothing to check.
If two independent home methods, measured on the same day, roughly agree with each other, that agreement is more trustworthy than either single number alone. Try the Navy tape method and a bioelectrical scale under the same conditions (morning, similarly hydrated) and see how close they land. A large persistent gap between methods suggests one is being thrown off by something — often the scale, by hydration — and the tape measurement is generally the more stable of the two to default to for ongoing tracking.
All home methods lose accuracy at the extremes, but the Navy tape method tends to degrade more gracefully than bioelectrical scales, which are particularly unreliable outside typical body composition ranges.
That's almost certainly hydration and food in your digestive tract affecting the electrical signal, not a real change in body fat. Body composition does not change meaningfully overnight — trust the weekly or monthly trend, not single readings.
For tape measurements, thin clothing over the measurement sites usually adds negligible error as long as it's not bulky. Consistency matters more than being unclothed — measure the same way every time.
